　　Dr. Jo Anne Smith-Flueck, B.Sc. University of California Berkeley. M.Sc. UC Davis, Ph.D. Argentine National University of Comahue, Her work in Argentina was instrumental in creating three reserves aimed at protected habitat of the native huemul, one of the most endangered deer of the world from S. America, found today only in the Andean cordillera of southern Argentina and Chile. For the last three International Deer Biology Congresses, Dr. Smith-Flueck has chaired the Scientific Steering Committee. She also currently chairs the Huemul Task Force of the IUCN. Dr. Smith-Flueck, a certified wildlife biologist with The Wildlife Society, concentrates her research on cervid biology, focusing the past 20 years on the invasive ecology of exotic deer and conservation biology of threatened native deer, with particular attention on determining the ultimate causes responsible for the lack of recruitment in most huemul populations. She has published over 90 papers and presented over 60 presentations at various scientific meetings and symposia. She was Guest Editor for the Special issue in Animal Production Science, CSIRO, Australia on the Proceedings of 7th International Deer Biology Congress and is currently Guest Editor of a special issue for the Swiss journalSustainability on Sustainable Wildlife Management and Conservation. Her publication on the endangered huemul, the first book ever written on the biology of this species, received the 2003 best scientific monograph publication award from The Wildlife Society, USA.
