鸟类生态学研究组组长,从事鸟类生态学、行为学、进化生物学和保护生物学研究,重点是我国青藏高原高山针叶林特有鸟类的起源、进化、行为、生态及保护生物学研究。长期担任中国动物学会鸟类学分会副理事长,并出任2013、2015、2017、2019年四届“中国鸟类学大会”的学术委员会主席。获评2016年度全国优秀科技工作者。目前担任中国动物学中文核心刊物《动物学杂志》主编和《中国鸟类研究简讯》主编。

与德国、瑞典、挪威、俄罗斯等国科学家开展了广泛的国际合作研究,在2006-2009年主持了国家自然科学基金委重大合作项目“青藏高原森林特有鸟类的进化、行为和生态学研究”,并在2016-2020年主持了国家自然科学基金委国际合作重点项目“生境破碎化对青藏高原森林鸡形目鸟类遗传多样性的影响机制”以及多个国家基金委面上项目。作为大会组委会秘书长,2009年7月在北京成功举办了“第23届国际保护生物学大会”,对中国保护生物学研究起到了推动作用。主要研究领域包括:

1)鸟类行为生态学研究

长期坚持在野外开展鸟类生态学、行为学研究,同时在室内通过行为实验,并结合理论模型开展相关研究。

室内研究的主要实验对象为虎皮鹦鹉,主要研究工作包括性选择、个性和学习、认知等方面。针对雌鸟对雄鸟的性选择方面设计了精巧的实验,研究证明了雌鸟对掌握一定技术的雄鸟更为青睐,相关研究成果以“Problem-solving males become more attractive to female budgerigars”在国际顶级学术刊物Science上发表。

野外鸟类生态学研究主要在甘肃省莲花山自然保护区的定位研究站开展,重点研究物种包括斑尾榛鸡、灰头鸫和噪鹛属鸟类等,研究内容包括鸟类的个性与性选择、警戒行为、雄鸟羽毛延迟成熟、巢寄生等,相关文章在国际高水平行为生态学和进化生物学刊物Animal BehaviourBehavioural Ecology and SociobiologyEvolution等上发表。

2)鸟类的基础生态学和保护生物学研究

   以甘肃莲花山定位研究站等地为研究基地,长期坚持青藏高原高山针叶林特有鸟类的生态保护研究,重点研究鸟类物种包括斑尾榛鸡、血雉、黑头噪鸦、四川林鸮、鬼鸮等。研究主要内容包括栖息地破碎化环境下斑尾榛鸡、血雉等鸡形目鸟类的景观遗传学研究、斑尾榛鸡的食性与栖息地保护研究、气候变化对黑头噪鸦等适应寒冷环境鸟类的影响、四川林鸮等特有鸮类的繁殖生物学和利用人工巢箱的保护生物学研究等。相关论文发表在国际高水平保护生物学刊物Biological Conservation和鸟类学刊物 Journal of Avian BiologyJournal of Ornithology等上发表。
